Hullo Brazil! My wife and I are dedicated Burners who live in New Orleans - we built the Lady Sassafras playa riverboat that was at Burning man this year - and we will be in Rio over the New Year and would love to meet some Burners who are there -

I also kite-surf and paraglide if you happen to do these as well! I have been to Rio 3 times, but its the first time for my wife, so she will be going crazy!

besos

I can fly to Brasil for free. I would go alone, but only speak a few words of Portuguese. Working on that, but probably not enough to get me around in a few weeks. anyone interested in going? I live in NYC, can either meet up down there, or if you live on the east coast, maybe we can fly down together. please reply to my regular email (not on tribe often) samiamfoto@gmail.com

Learning Brazilian Portuguese

Hello! (Oi!)
My boyfriend is from Goiania, and I'm attempting to learn Brazilian Portuguese. I know some Italian, and some Spanish, so a lot of words are familiar to me, but the pronunciation is killing me! Does anyone have any advice for learning? (My boyfriend isn't a very good teacher -he gets too frustrated. His mom is a better teacher, but I don't see her often, and she doesn't speak any English! We do a lot of pointing and acting things out!) Any good books, cds, something? Thanks!

Studying abroad in Recife

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be studying abroad in the "Spring" of 2009 (in northern hemisphere) in Recife. From the brochures/websites that I have seen, it is a blend of the old and new, with some really great beaches too. I have also heard that it is a "Little Venice" of sorts due to all the streams flowing throughout. Does anybody else here have some "insider" information on Recife? I'm sort of taking a leap of faith because I haven't heard much about it compared to Rio de Janeiro (where I also get to study during January). Oh, and does anybody know what carnival is like down there? What I've heard is that it's pretty lively. :D

Thanks!

REQUEST: 2 or 3 experienced samba dancers to team up with me on the playa for a short choreographed performance on the stage of the Havana Room...we'll put together costume idea, choose some music, get a few moves down.... NO STRESS, JUST FUN.

I was just given a CD by Sabrina Malheiros and I'm amazed. What a gread CD. My wife is from Para and the only music she knows well is the old country stuff like Zezé Di Camargo e Luciano and Chitaozinho & Xororo.
Staying for a longer time, things to do in Brazilia

Oi,

I have arrived at Brazil about 3 months ago. Would like to stay much longer than the total of 6 months (including extension) that my tourist visa allows... if it matters anything, my passport is Israeli, I have a Masters degree, and speak Portuguese. Does anyone have any idea of what can I do in order to lengthen my stay without becoming illegal?

Thanks.

I don't understand the word "quintal" in the context of, for example, the name of the group "Fundo De Quintal". What does it mean here? Also there is a Jorge Aragao song "Do Nosso Do Fundo Quintal". Anyhow I can't figure it out.

Since you can't send your application directly to the SF Brazil consulate, you need to use a Visa agency.
Does anyone have any recommendations for agencies that they've used successfully?

(I'm in Portland, OR)

I am heading to Salvador for my first ever trip to Brazil on the 28th of this month. I am very excited about the visit, but also painfully aware of my ignorance.

Does anyone have good information about visiting Salvador? I am especially interested in places to stay, places to study samba/percussion, places to study capoeira, and places to study Portuguese.

I will be there for about six weeks and I hope to go back again after that....

Thanks to anyone who reads this, and especially to anyone who posts helpful replies!

Anyone interested in renting my apartment in Rio for Carnival. It is a small 1 bedroom. Located 1 block from the beach in Leme. Very safe area. Simply furnished. Having spent carnival here last year, I have decided I would prefer to be in nature this time around. The price is negotiable.

Greetings family,
I am on my way to Curitiba to be with my love and I'm looking for a cheap ticket or...even better a frequent flyer voucher on American/or Delta airlines.
I'm tight on cash but have quite a few items for barter: 2 Armoires (one's a beautiful Indonesian style), I've also got two really FUN purple velvet couches (org. paid $5,000 for these but am looking to sell all of my stuff to make this trip happen). oh...I've got a
ProPlus II treadmill (org. paid $2,700 for this, it's big and great for runners in the winter season). I can give you all the specs on these items if you're interested.
I really need this ticket asap because it's getting difficult to book these flights due to the holiday season.

Many thanks. Blessings,
Jennifer

My girl and I are planning on a 4-5 month trip to Floripa, Brazil in Feb or March of 2007. I served a Mormon mission from 1992-94 in Santa Catarina and Parana. While I haven't been Mormon for a long time, I still have a deep love for my brotha and sistas in Brazil.

We would love to strike up some friendships with some of you who are down near Floripa, or plan to be vacationing down there during that time period. Check out our profiles to learn more about us. We'd love to connect with other Burners and artists.

Wow!!!
I was SO touched watching this movie: Forbidden Wedding
I saw it on the SUNDANCE Channel. Please check it out when you have a moment!

**************************
FORBIDDEN WEDDING
directed by Flavia Fontes in 2004
(Stereo/Subtitles)

Is sex the only reason for marriage? Some apparently believe it is, including those who strictly interpret Vatican Law 1084. This moving Brazilian documentary by Flavia Fontes tells the story of Hedir, a paraplegic, and Mara, his fiancée, whose wedding was forbidden by the Catholic Church on the grounds that Hedir is sexually impotent and therefore prohibited from marrying. Interviews with friends, family and Catholic religious leaders present the opposing sides in this inspiring exploration of faith, love and intimacy.

Hi,

Years ago I went to a really cool electronica full moon acid party (around 1994 or 1995) on an island in Brasil at the Casa de Luis? I can't even remember which island. Uhummm...too much partying. Anyway, did anyone ever go to one of these parties. Anything like that still happening? I love to revisit that very cool international party or something like it if it still exists. Perhaps it was just a dream:-)

LENINE LIVE!

Caught Lenine last night in his West Coast North American performance in Los Angeles and what a thrill it was! All it took was Lenine and his two guitars to bring the audience to two standing ovations. His voice is just as rich and energetic as you'd imagine it to be, and his guitar playing stellar. I thought I'd miss him not having a full band but it couldn't be farther from the truth.

If you don't know Lenine, and in this tribe I can't imagine people not knowing who he is, I highly recommend you get to know him and his work. His first American release on Six Degrees Records is a fantastic compilation of his previous Brazilian albums.

Anybody here see the show? Fans of Lenine?

A heads-up to New Yorkers. . . Next week he'll be playing in a couple of appearances (including a show at Joe's Pub on Tuesday) so get out there and have a great time!

Oi lusophiles,
I'm travelling to Brazil for the second time in January, this time I'll be in Ilheus for almost a month staying at a friend's place. I'd love recommendations for what to do in the area. Also, does anyone know of any escolas de danca in the area?

I'm hoping to make it back up to Salvador in February for Carnaval and to take dance classes at the Fundacao Cultural do Bahia.

Brazilian YOGA!Ginastica Natural seminar in San Francisco!

Ginastica Natural Event that we will have April 15th and 2572 3rd st,SF,Ca.

What is Ginastica Natural...

Ginástica Natural combines the techniques of stretching, flexibility and respiration of hatha-yoga, the ground movements of jiu-jitsu, and the natural movements of the human body. Idealized by Alvaro Romano, it is a revolutionary method of physical conditioning that has an objective of developing physical qualities associated with motor and mental skills. Romano elaborated a methodology for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Originally Ginástica Natural
was intended to be practiced outdoors, however today it is a complete method. Alvaro Romano developed an adequate system that allows Ginástica Natural to be practiced in gyms. There is also a licensing for instructors to administer the classes.

Unlike what seems to suggest a creative nomenclature of movements - monkey, spider, tiger, eagle, etc. - Ginástica Natural does not consist of imitating animals. The names of the positions are merely an illustration, referring to the similarities to some animals. It deals with a gymnastic of movements that are analized and tested by Alvaro Romano before applying them in the classes. These positions help develop diverse physical qualities such as strength, flexibility, rhythm, balance, motor coordination, and muscular resistance. Exercises that use animal movements have always existed, that is why Alvaro sought to develop a different method. Based on the body expression classes that he had attended, primarily, on intuition, creativity and discipline, Alvaro decided to criate something new, which combined all his experiences with physical activities. The classes last about an hour and are practiced wearing comfortable clothes, aside from knee pads, to the sound of new age and techno.

Alvaro Romano will arrived April 14th and he will be available for privates friday night and sunday all day at Open Door.

The seminar of Natural Gymnastics will happen at 2572 3rd ST,SF,Ca,94107

www.ginasticanatural.com.br

The Cost will be 80$ advance...

100$ at the Door!

Spaces are limited....

Duo Ello performs in NYC!!!

(see photo of this ad in the gallery)

Carlos Stasi & Guello
================
Elo is a Portuguese word meaning 'link,' a reference to the union of Stasi and Guello, two of the greatest Brazilian percussionists. Another meaning is implied when the words duo and elo are read altogether, forming the word ´duelo´ (´duel´ in English). This refers to the way both members perform.

Stasi and Guello are also known for their expertise on two main Brazilian instruments, the reco-reco and the pandeiro respectively. The duet was formed in 1999 and impresses for its energy and remarkable performances, a constant dialogue between two soloists.

Working on various fields of music: studio recording, popular music, solo and contemporary percussion, samba and Brazilian rhythms, composition, teaching and music research, Stasi and Guello contribute with their individual qualities to the development of a very unique work, a laboratory where they share their personal experiences and create original music.

Duo Ello suspends general boundaries established between the classical and the popular, maintaining and intensifying the spirit and energy of both, innovating techniques, creating a new repertoire and language and keeping away from the sameness.

Carlos Stasi is a performer composer who has written more than 100 pieces for percussion, mostly solos. He first specialized on contemporary percussion and has been teaching at the São Paulo State University/Unesp since 1987. He is also co-director of its Percussion Ensemble - ´Grupo Piap´. Stasi has a Master Degree from the California Institute of the Arts - Calarts, where he also taught, and a PhD from the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa. Initiated on musical scrapers by his uncle Nadir Rovari, Stasi has been working with these instruments since 1982; studying, playing, composing, developing a notation system for them and conducting research in 21 countries. In 1988 he created Duo Experimental with percussionist Edson Gianesi and in 1990 he created the RECO - Center for Studies of Musical Scrapers.

Luis Carlos Xavier Guello began his percussion career with samba master Osvaldinho da Cuíca. During the 80's he formed Grupo Livre Percussão, researching and composing pieces based on Brazilian rhythms. He has been recording with some of the greatest Brazilian artists such as Zizi Possi, Paulo Moura, Joyce, Marco Pereira, Badi Assad, Edson Cordeiro, Antônio Nóbrega and Sá e Guarabira. He is a former member of Banda Sossega-Leão and the legendary Mexe-com-Tudo, a band that electrified São Paulo nights for more than a decade.

Guello has taught at the ´Conservatório de Música de Tatuí' and has been acclaimed as one of the most important Brazilian percussionists and pandeiro players.
I live in Venice and am wondering who else would be interested in helping make this happen.

so in order to keep up with my newly acquired portuguese and see all the films/hear all the music i missed, i'm going to start having brazil nights at my or a friend's apartment in SF.

talking in portuguese, watching brazilian films, drinking capetas, swapping MP3s, trading travel stories (or advice for those going)--all on a (bi?)weekly basis, to start sometime after Burning Man. i want to see if people are interested, so let me know both if you like it and what evenings of the week are good for you (M T W or Th). if enough people are into it and on the same night, then i'll put it together--first round of drinks will be on me :)

abracos,

hostel vs hotel

im planning on spending a few weeks in rio in february but am torn between spending them in a hostel or a hotel with nicer accomodation.

im torn because this time around id prefer something nice, as well as a place i can bring people back to(the hostel i stayed at wouldnt allow visitors).

a hotel would be nice because i could get a nice place, but wouldnt have the benefit of having access to a lot of people to meet like i would at a hostel.. plus the hostel i stayed at had planned activities/events that we could attend. if i stay at a hotel i think i may have a hard time finding out about the cool/fun things to do.

Florianopolis

OK Brasileiros and everyone else - I'm planning to spend next spring (Apr-Jun) in Brazil - probably Floripa - and was thinking of renting a simple apartment near the beach to practise my beginner-level surfing. Can anyone provide advice on:

1) Recommendations on which area to stay and how to find that elusive, reasonably priced studio/1-Bdrm. I'd like a surf break that doesn't have too much "localism" & is also close to some nightlife. Roughly how much will rents be?

2) I hear a car is pretty useful. Anyone know of a good cheap rental agency on the island?

Some background - it's my 3rd time to Brazil and I previously spent 2 mths in Salvador and another month just traveling around the country. This trip is about practising the surfing and I thot Floripa since I haven't been to the south. If anyone has other thoughts, bring 'em on!

Thanks!

Samba Dance in Carnival Parade

I have been Samba dancing for some time now, and am part of a semi-pro performing group. I really want to move to Brazil for about a year and a half or so and intend to get my visa through obtaining an internship through AIESEC (an international student organization that arranges just that, internships abroad usually for recent grads). From what I have heard/read, Carnival parades are the biggest in Rio, so I think that is where I am going to try to go. My question is, does anyone know anything about the Samba schools in Brazil and how difficult it is to get into one?

solo mission?

What do you people think about travelling solo as a female in brazil? I speak spanish; zero portugese. I'm interested in spending some time in the wilderness (I would find an organized group to do this) as well as spending a week in Sao Paulo and Rio. What's the travel culture like there? I've always found brazilians to be extremely friendly and outgoing and have heard wonderful things about the country.
